Off The Beaten Path: Always Christmas
SONORA (CBS13) ―
Summer may be coming soon, but in the town of Sonora, the calendar is always stuck in December. I say one little store never stops celebrating Christmas.
There are always two flags flying outside this shop in Sonora, and old Saint Nick. Dorothea's is celebrating selling Christmas items here for twenty years.
Trees and ornaments never come down. There's always a huge selection of angels and bells, reindeer and glass orbs. You can buy lighted Christmas scenes and Santa's in every size and shape.
In fact, this is one of Dorothea's busy seasons. Boxes of new arrivals wait to be stocked, and demand here is so good, there's hardly an inch of empty shelf space. Salesperson Sharon Nicholas couldn't be happier.
"I never get tired of Christmas," says Sharon.
So how can a little store specializing in just Christmas survive way away from the big city?
Remember, Sonora is a huge tourist attraction, so folks are dropping by here all year long.
"We get a lot of foreign, European mainly, like England, Ireland, Scotland," says Sharon.
Owner Marcia Bennett says old fashion glass ornaments are big this year as customers get nostalgic.
"People like it, it reminds them of when we kids, children, yeah," says Marcia.
David Folk was almost overwhelmed by the selection here, "I'm from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania and every place we go one of my goals is to get a Christmas ornament that reminds me of the trip," he explains.
If you want to get a real head start on next Christmas, here's the big seller; a statue by designer Jim Shore.
"I think it's the colors he uses and everything looks like a quilt," explain Marcia.
So if Christmas is your favorite holiday, stop by Dorothea's and meet the elves who keep that season going year 'round.
Dorothea's recently survived the opening of a big box store nearby, by stocking more high end collector ornaments.
