Are Roses A Good Buy For Cash-Strapped City?

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ― The city of Sacramento facing a multi-million dollar deficit may spend money to replace roses at McKinley Park. It may seem like a frivolous buy for the cash-strapped city, but it could actually be a money-making deal.

That's because Sacramento currently charges just $37 an hour for people to get married at the McKinley Park Rose Garden.  Sprucing it up would allow the city to charge more.

"A lot of the roses are sick and are past their prime and don't bloom as prolifically as they could any longer," said Ellie Longanecker of the Rose Society.   "In general, the majority of the roses, it's about time for them to be replaced."

The Rose Society has already made a $22,000 dollar donation to replace the roses, but says the park also needs a new drip irrigation system.  And the city would have to pay for that.  City Councilman Steve Cohn says the city is currently looking into a plan to redesign the garden.

"There is the potential to raise revenue although we don't primarily use it for that purpose.  It's primarily we want it to be available to the public," said Cohn.

There is also talk of building a wedding terrace at the park.
