The Scoop: Fire Department Cutbacks
R.E. Graswich
SACRAMENTO (OPINION) ―
When the Sacramento Police Department said last week that the next step in its budget meltdown was eliminating people from the payroll, there was shock and disbelief at city hall. Apparently, they haven't been paying attention to the scoop.
Back in February -- that's right, February -- I raised the alarm about the possibility of police layoffs. The cops and politicians screamed bloody murder, saying I didn't know what I was talking about. Well, at least I knew how to read a budget.
Now, I'm warning you about Sacramento Fire department cutbacks. The city has already taken fire trucks off line on a rotating basis. The next move will be to go from four person engine crews to three person teams. That's a recipe for disaster, and recent fires in Natomas are good lessons. I'll have more details in upcoming "Scoops".
